WIP excerpt from today’s writing. Can’t believe I’m 85-90% done with this novel!

Money changed hands, and we passed the man, and headed down into the belly of the beast. I wasn’t prepared for what waited for me there, but I was quite pleased as it dawned on me. There was a little stage, and a little bar, and all of the gentlemen in the establishment were quite free with one another.

It did, however, take an entire bottle of wine before I was appeased of the notion that the constabulary was going to break into the establishment and arrest all of us, as one read about the papers. But once I was a bottle in, I was quite free with my affection too, hanging off of the doctor, and kissing him, and even pulling him up to dance for a few minutes while the little band played on the stage.

“This feels more illegal than our other club, Enoch,” I murmured to him afterward, as I leaned against him at the table. I was watching another couple in the corner who seemed to be doing a little more than kissing, and I averted my eyes to give them a little privacy.

“That it does, doesn’t it,” Enoch murmured, his fingers tracing loops through my hair as he sipped his wine with his other hand. “Imagine, love that’s more illegal than thievery.”

“If it’s evil, then I won’t mind hell,” I murmured back, nuzzling his fingertips. “I’ll go to hell with you, Enoch, if we can dance there.”

He kissed my cheek, and then my lips. “I’ll make sure Lucifer knows to strike up the band, my dear.”
