I don’t know much about Homestuck (I’m kinda enjoying learning more about it though – all against my will) but I’m curious-Do you think it would be a good idea to maybe…idk. Redo it? It sounds like an interesting thing with some genuinely fascinating concepts and I like being able to pick up concepts and do them “better” than their original creator (usually because the creator didn’t care to flesh out a character, or the creator was just genuinely uninterested in creating an interesting narrative). From what I hear, the creator of Homestuck seemed pretty immature (in a bad way), and that left a bad taste in many fans mouths? Idk I guess I’m asking if it sounds interesting to you, if somebody were to pick up the pieces and say “Yeah. This could be better. Fix-it fic but it’s the whole damn thing.”
Lots of people have already tried (to various degrees of success) to do so.
If you wanted to do so, I’m definitely not discouraging you from trying!
The problem with Homestuck is this:
It superficially apes the tropes and form of a typical YA novel.
But Andrew Hussie didn’t set out to write one. Andrew Hussie set out to write an edgy, foul mouthed 4chan humor story where no subject was too taboo for a cheap joke.
Hussie wrote, before Homestuck, and continuing into homestuck– edgy, racially charged, slur filled LOL random gorefests where no topic was too taboo for a quick jab at humor.
Problem Sleuth– and I LOVE Problem Sleuth– is mostly based around humor that assumes that gay people and gay porn are worthy of ridicule.
and like, before Homestuck, that was his audience.
a forum full of Something Awful goons and 4chan refugees.
Homestuck was never supposed to hit the tumblr crowd.
And if you actually read Homestuck you can tell it wasn’t.
All of the cool characters and interesting plot arcs and neat worldbuilding happen in between, and largely in service to, slurs and the edgy jokes about horse dildos.
