‼️ Fiction cannot cause physical harm to someone.
‼️ The only person who should have the power to decide if a piece of fiction is harming you emotionally or psychologically is you.
‼️ Any fiction you feel like you are being harmed by you can stop reading/watching/creating it at any time.
‼️ You are always in control when you are consuming or creating fiction.
‼️ Do not surrender the power to decide what fictional ideas might cause you emotional or psychological harm to other people.
‼️ No one will ever know better than you what ideas are harmful to you personally.
‼️ You cannot decide what is psychologically or emotionally harmful to another person.
‼️ Attempting to restrict the kind of fiction that people create or consume because you think it might cause them emotional or psychological harm is authoritarian.
‼️ It is safe to explore any ideas and themes in fiction. Fiction does not and cannot cause physical harm to any person. You are always in control of the fiction you are creating or consuming.
It’s true if you ignore every single stereotype of race, gender and so on that gets reinforced by *checks it* fiction.
It’s true if you ignore Fiction that is also propaganda to spread and reinforce harmful agendas (think Nazi propaganda or even closer to us, take every single piece of FICTION that reinforced that black people is either violent brutes or servants)
Fiction does not exist in a vacuum, it’s time tumblr uses take some accountability.
Yes, of course, Lord of The Rings cannot harm me, but you know who can? The Neonazis that use Tolkien race divisions to spread their beliefs, they totally can hurt me.
So does MAPS roaming around here, so does TERFS and Tradwives and Neonazis and the fiction they might have been putting out under the disguise of self expression and harmless fiction.
Fiction is only harmless as long it stays in the author’s head. Tumblr is not your diary.
Yes, of course, Lord of The Rings cannot harm me, but you know who can? The Neonazis that use Tolkien race divisions to spread their beliefs, they totally can hurt me.
So if you’re saying Tolkien is responsible for neonazis, what do you think we should do about that?
Are you saying no one should read Lord of the Rings because SOME assholes used it as inspiration for their hate?
Because if so you are basically proving my point here.
Almost nobody is gonna agree with you that Lord of the Rings is responsible for harm.
Saying FICTION is to blame for horrible things among society actually takes away accountability from the real ppl who committed atrocities.
You are literally giving the culprits an excuse for committing their crimes.
#blaming atrocities on the existence of fiction actively takes away the accountability of those who committed the atrocities#blaming it on fiction gives those people a shield to hide behind#‘target this instead so i can get away with it’ stop holding fiction accountable for the atrocities real life people committed in real life#anti culture
