Y’know what while we’re here-A lot of what I write is mostly “fan perspective” content about a thing me and my partner are making (as in, I’m choosing to write in my downtime as a fan of the Thing, not as a Creator Worrying About The Lore Implications), and I like doing this. I like being a fan of the Thing, because I was originally a fan of it and I don’t really consider myself a co-creator.Anyway, I was gonna ask you a simple question; For the purposes of tagging, do you think “This work is an alternate universe with 0 connection to the lore” falls under a fanfic AU tag or more of a “Original Work – Alternate Universe” kinda thing? I’m very curious because none of this is canon (it is, but it’s complicated) and you seem to know how AO3 works.
“original work- alternate universe” seems to be being used for when a fan writer creates a whole new universe with their own intricate lore. Like, for instance, weird Undertale variants.
If your work is deliberately creating a unique universe unto itself, where the elements from the original are more of a vehicle to tell your own intricate story, I’d use that tag.
If you’re just writing a fic without bothering to dig too deep into what’s canon or not, I’d use “AU canon divergence” or a flavor of fanfic au tag that suits it.
If anyone else wants to weigh in on this please do!
