i feel like there was a time where people would get mad at people saying “i dont usually like ___ but this is great!” like it was some big insult. to me that always seemed like a deliberately bad faith interpretation of what would obviously read to anyone normal as “i dont usually like ____ but this has qualities so exceptional that it overrides my usual preferences”

the other one was people saying “this looks like/reminds me of ____!” which is at worst a little annoying and not the grievous insult it was treated as. it’s a clumsy attempt to connect to your work. unless its an unfavorable comparison, “this reminds me of that thing i like” is just a pedestrian art opinion found in every single person on the planet

Shit like this is exactly why people stopped reblogging things and commenting on art and fic.

They (we!) saw people being shit on and mobbed and put on blast and held up for public mockery by (a few, not tons of) artists and writers they liked, and decided that commenting at all was not worth the risk that the creator was going to kick you in the balls for it.

#we stopped because we were told it was a fucking insult#that creating a piece of art so wonderful that it skewed a preference away for a moment was somehow an insult#there was a fic i read that had the hanahaki trope in it#i definitively do not like the hanahaki trope; im very touchy about body horror and the hanahaki trope bothers me immensely#however the way this writer used it to craft their fic was indescribable; it moved me in a way i cant describe#it remains one of my favorite fics#and i never told the fic writer this#because the phrase ‘i normally hate (insert thing here) but this is amazing’ was considered a horrible insult#to create something so moving that it pushes someone away from their normal preference; how the fuck is that an insult
