shakespearefreak:

I asked my therapist last week if she thought being proship was wrong. She didn’t know what “proship” and “anti-ship” meant, so I explained. I also told her that I kind of wanted it to be wrong, because it would make navigating the internet easier if I believed it was.

So she thinks a bit, and then goes, “Well, it’s kind of like that movie Se7en, right? It’s a good movie, but there’s a lot of really messed-up stuff in it. Watching it doesn’t mean you’re actually going to send someone a head in a box, or that the filmmakers support murder.”

Reminder that a) this person is a licensed therapist, and b) she had never even heard the term “proshipping” 10 minutes before this. She came to this conclusion totally on her own; I did not mention equating shipping to violence in fiction at all, and she came up with the same argument a lot of proshippers use regularly.

So yeah, I feel kinda validated. It’s frustrating in a way, because like I said, part of me hoped she’d say, “Actually, that sounds unhealthy and here’s why” and then give me a reason that actually made sense to me so that I was less afraid of being in certain places on the internet and maybe get some friends back. But she didn’t. So… yeah.
