I mean. Colorism and beauty standards are deeply intertwined, anon, both here and in Japan.

Like in the US, many people in Japan don’t like to admit the racism and colorism that’s ingrained in their society, and tend to pretend that there isn’t any.

From an american point of view– one that isn’t educated in Japan’s cultural history and the types of racist tropes that one sees in their media– racism in japanese media can often be easy to miss.

I have a whole essay in me somewhere about this but like–

trust me anon, you do not want to look at Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or Pokemon Legends Arceus while knowing about the history of Japanese racism and colonialism.

Legends Arceus in particular is about as culturally sensitive as Disney’s Pocahontas.
