I have been seeing too many people refer fanfiction as “written CP.” CP is not when “explicit fanfiction with an underage character.” CP is where real life children are being exploited and abused in either photo or video form. If underage smut in fanfiction is “CP,” then by that logic, Lolita is “written CP.” CP is where actual real life children get hurt, people who are uncomfortable with underage smut in fiction. That fictional underage character has no autonomy and can’t be traumatized. A real life child has growing autonomy and can get hurt. Equating fanfiction to CP hurts real life victims. – a mini rant by an anon who is so tired of seeing real life victims’ pain and suffering get compared to fictional content.
The term “CP” or “child pornography” should not be used in any circumstances.
The term that should be used is CSAM– Child Sexual Abuse Material. A term which is accurate to the horrible crime being committed to create it.
Why is it called child sexual abuse material instead of child pornography?
While the term child pornography is still widely used by the public, it’s more accurate to call it what it is: evidence of child sexual abuse. That’s why RAINN and others have stopped using the term child pornography and switched to referring to it as CSAM — child sexual abuse materials.
While some of the pornography online depicts adults who have consented to be filmed, that’s never the case when the images depict children. Just as kids can’t legally consent to sex, they can’t consent to having images of their abuse recorded and distributed. Every explicit photo or video of a kid is actually evidence that the child has been a victim of sexual abuse.
And obviously, fiction and artwork are not created by exploiting or abusing a child, so they are not CSAM.
