Before AND during. If we know there’s something that will come up during the course of the story or is major or integral to it, we’ll do it first. But often during the course of writing things will come up that we never thought about until after we were midway through.
We (mostly) find research very fun. I think one of the most interesting things we researched for a fic was 1970s security systems.
