hey quick question!! how would someone be able to not read a fic with triggering shit in it without a warning without reading the shit that will trigger them? idk just a fucking though that it takes 0 fucking effort to warn for shit and you’re so annoying for being like ummm it’s not my responsibility actually! like grow the fuck up and give a shit about other fucking people.
hey quick question!! how would someone be able to not read a fic with triggering shit in it without a warning without reading the shit that will trigger them?
Simple. Don’t read fics that don’t have trigger warnings. Don’t watch movies that don’t have a “does the dog die” page. Don’t read books without a comprehensive list of trigger warnings someone else made.
idk just a fucking though that it takes 0 fucking effort to warn for shit
Not true, it actually takes a lot of effort to consider all the possible things in your fiction that someone else might want a warning for.
and you’re so annoying for being like ummm it’s not my responsibility actually!
It’s not my responsibility. Your feelings are not my responsibility. Your mental health is not my responsibility.
like grow the fuck up and give a shit about other fucking people.
How about you grow the fuck up and take responsibility and have some agency in your own care instead of expecting the rest of the world to cater to your comfort specifically?
how about you care about other people by not demanding that everyone cater to your preferences?
“hey quick question!! how would someone be able to not read a fic with triggering shit in it without a warning without reading the shit that will trigger them?”
simple, by not reading it. if “Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings”/CNTW makes it so you don’t know if your trigger is or is not in this, then you can just choose not read, or you can have a friend who doesn’t have those triggers read it first so they can warn you of any potential triggers. if people with peanut allergies can respect a “may or may not contain nuts” labels on foods, then you can respect a CNTW tag on a fic
now, if you do come across a fic without a CNTW and no other warning that this fic in does contain a trigger specified in the archive warnings that’s a different story. report it for being mistagged
“idk just a fucking though that it takes 0 fucking effort to warn for shit”
having to consider what to tag as a warning at bare minimum makes it takes more time to post, which for and impatience-to-share writer can suck some of the fun out of sharing. a CNTW is quick and simple and brings back that fun while still telling people this fic “may or may not contain nuts” (a.k.a their “mental allergies” which is just a term for triggers, squicks, and icks)
in most cases, if the fic falls in a gray area it can take a lot of thinking of which warnings actually apply and which don’t due to how talked about and or how seriously certain things are treated. it also it takes a lot of thinking to consider what can be found triggering by strangers that have never crossed your mind as a possible trigger before (e.g. i never realized small spaces just being described, even as something comforting, can trigger people). a CNTW takes away that fretting about potential triggers and stress of feeling responsible for an unknown amount of strangers mental health
it also takes emotional energy to decide if this is something that would spoil the fic and lead to a worse reading experience or of it’s something that would add to the reading experience. a CNTW takes that burden of worry off writers shoulders
also, to counter point, it takes less or equal effort to (on ao3) open filters, scroll down to “exclude” and select “CNTW” along with any of other triggering, squicky, or icky tags and then press “sort and filter”, or (on tumblr) to open settings, scroll to “content you see” and enter in triggering, squicky, icky words and phrases and or to just block users
“and you’re so annoying for being like ummm it’s not my responsibility actually!”
finding people annoying for choosing CNTW is a personal opinion driven from a sense of entitlement not being met. you feel entitled to every fic being catered to you, as if it’s fic writers responsible to cater to you, and so when they don’t, it annoys you. i frankly do not care easing about your annoyance, that’s something you can learn to live with
it is my responsibility to either warn if a fic does or does not contain peanuts, or to warn that it may or may nor contain peanuts. i get to choose which based on my preference because both warn people with certain mental allergies to read at their own risk less they be sent into an emotional allergic response. it is not my responsibility to tell you anything beyond that, it is your responsibility to either accept that you can’t read this, or accept responsibility that you be trigger while reading.
so ummm actually, it isn’t my responsibility
you are just annoyed that you aren’t my responsibility, you are annoyed that millions of strangers aren’t my responsibility
you are annoyed and i don’t care, because your annoyance isn’t my responsibility. none of your emotions are my responsibility
“like grow the fuck up and give a shit about other fucking people.”
warning with a CNTW is giving shit about other people, but it’s also giving a shit about myself and my wants at the same time. i tell readers that this thing may have triggers, squicks, or icks so they can choose whether or not to take any risks, and i don’t have to worry and stress about accidentally forgetting something or spoiling my fic to much and making it a worse reading experience
if anything, why don’t you learn to care about and respect authors who can’t handle the mental load of being responsible for millions of strangers mental health? why can’t you grow up and accept responsibility for you own mental health by just not reading a CNTW fic?
why don’t you learn to care about and respect writers who want their fics—that they took time out of the day, wrote for free, and put so much effort into—to be read without spoilers? you clearly aren’t their target audience (for a lack of a better term) if a CNTW is too much for you, why can’t you grow up and accept that?
why don’t you grow up and learn to care about and respect writers that aren’t doing everything you want them to, in the ways you want them to?
you are not entitled to every fanfic catering to your preferences and needs. you are not entitled to every fic being accessible to you. you are entitled to having every writer specifically warn for every thing that may be upsetting rather then just generally warning for a possibility of it being you can’t be bothered to check off “Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings” in the exclude section of your filters
if you see a CNTW, grow up and move on if you can’t handle any of the potential triggers like a responsible and caring person would rather then pitching a fit because you just want to be able to click and read without having to filter out CNTW and other potentially triggering, squicky, or icky fics
