People used to comment on web comics.

People used to comment on fanfiction.

People used to comment on fanart.

People used to comment on OCs.

I hate “content” culture.

I hate “consuming content” and scrolling immediately to the next thing.

People used to be excited about the art that other people created.

People used to want to share that excitement with creators.

I hate this future.

There’s a beauty that comes with seeing something old and scrolling down to the comments.

Even if the website is half defunct and nobody can comment there anymore, it’s almost as if the text is a fossil of an internet age gone by.

There was a beauty in an internet that was young and carefree, where the etiquette was different, and you didn’t find as many bots in the comments of popular stuff. It was like you and a few others were able to find something great.

Maybe I’m rambling, and this text will all become more bytes in an endless pit of data, but, hey, the internet as it was isn’t just a dream seen through nostalgia glasses, it’s empirical proof of the effects of brands taking direct control of culture.

This is what happens when the people lose their voice, people begin to speak for us. And suddenly the once bright firmament of voices is reduced to a few stars, drowned out by corpo speak.

I don’t know why I wrote this, but here it goes.
