People used to comment on web comics.

People used to comment on fanfiction.

People used to comment on fanart.

People used to comment on OCs.

I hate “content” culture.

I hate “consuming content” and scrolling immediately to the next thing.

People used to be excited about the art that other people created.

People used to want to share that excitement with creators.

I hate this future.

This. I used to write fanfic back between 2008 on Livejournal, then ff.net and ao3 until around 2016. It’s been 8 years since I last wrote anything and one drastic difference is the absolute lack of comments and hits on WIP stories.

I’m not saying you have to comment on everything you read, or read every WIP from the start. But it used to be that people liked discussing the stories with the writers as they were written, used to show excitement and interest on the stories. Now you can write blindly for chapters on end and have no idea if people even like the story. There seems to be a culture to only read stories once they are complete. Sometimes it can take years for an author to finish a story. That means years without any idea if their ideas are valued or enjoyed. It does feel a bit like writing into a void. But you continue doing it, because you enjoy it.

Readers don’t owe the authors comments etc- don’t get me wrong. But I personally miss the interaction and excitement there used to be in fanfic writing. It’s so different now. It’s better in other ways, but this is one thing I miss.
