Hate how fandom purity culture has made character age discourse so overwhelming and loud that that those people will tell you it’s inappropriate to speculate on who characters who are canonically children might date in a fanfiction set it the future.
Fucking ridiculous.
It is ridiculous!!
It’s unfortunately also starting to become a problem in canon material spaces, too. It’s definitely a problem in fanfiction and fandom areas that needs to be addressed, but this problem has been spreading and is now part of canonical sequels.
There’s a 14/15 year old character in a franchise we watch, who got a continuation sequel last year where she was shown as an adult throughout the whole season – 26 by this point.
Fans began complaining that her romantic relationship – which did not officially begin until she was an adult – was “Dating a minor”. Age discourse over this kind of thing has resulted in people calling a canonically twenty-six year old woman who now has a job as a teacher and is able to canonically drink alcohol, a minor.
If this kind of stuff spreads to canon spaces more often after its prevalence in fanfiction, so many potential canon sequel stories aren’t going to be considered worth it. They’re not just stifling fanfiction, they’re encouraging less art from being created in official spaces, too.
