People used to comment on web comics.

People used to comment on fanfiction.

People used to comment on fanart.

People used to comment on OCs.

I hate “content” culture.

I hate “consuming content” and scrolling immediately to the next thing.

People used to be excited about the art that other people created.

People used to want to share that excitement with creators.

I hate this future.

Once someone tagged art that I made with “woah” and I think about it at least once a week. Someone else said “oh neat” once. Someone else WROTE A WHOLE DAMN POEM IN THE COMMENTS. Anyways even just one word can change how someone sees their art. You don’t even have to think about it too hard. You could put a keyboard smash and I’d probably cry from joy.

I’m also trying hard to interact more, I understand that it’s hard to break away from opening your phone and being in Content Consumption Mode.

this is why, even if I am probably coming off as annoying to some, I try to comment on what people make. Making art is hard. Making comics is hard. Making anything is hard. And when you put all that effort in and it seems like no one cares, it can really really suck (that can come from not sharing, not commenting, not hyping it etc). It’s the least I can do as a fellow creative to boost the other creatives I care about. There is no shame in showing love and appreciation for other people’s hard work.

I’ve been feeling like this lately. I’ve always been apprehensive with commenting on people’s work since I overthink things I constantly worry about either saying something stupid, getting dragged into some debate that could get me cancelled, or saying something that may sound rude or offensive, but with the way the world is due to this obsession with content consumption I want to to try breaking out of my comfort zone and show support for other creators.

Making art is hard, and even in the digital landscape talking is scary, but nothing is worse than putting your blood, sweat, & tears into something only for it to feel like no one cares

yeah exactly you nailed it! The way internet culture has changed has made it more of a social faux pas to be vocal about your support of something and you can easily be sucked into drama you never even intended of being apart of. Or your comments get directed in ways you couldn’t even fathom. Nuance gets easily lost when it comes to text posts. So if you aren’t clear with your intent, you can get hurt in ways you wouldn’t even imagine. And it should’ve never been this way. We’re all so scared of hurting one another that it makes things worse unintentionally.

But I think that’s especially why it’s important to let art and creatives connect all of us and we recognize that they are human beings who have wants and needs, and work incredibly hard to make what they do. The humanity of artists is often lost, intentionally or not and we need to be mindful of the fact that just because there is a digital entity separating all of us, doesn’t mean the other person on the other end doesn’t have thoughts or feelings. Art is such a deeply personal thing and it’s so important to recognize how much personal expression goes into it, and how much validation that can require, and how that’s not a bad thing what so ever! Showing support can come from so many ways depending on one’s financial situation, but you do what you can with the tools you have access to.
