Actually you do not need to respect the creator or their intentions for the characters when writing fanfiction or shipping.
That’s kind of the whole point of fanfiction and shipping– doing what you want with the material without regard to the original creator’s intentions.

And don’t forget when you talk about “respecting the creator’s wishes” that the creator of Danny Phantom directly told his fandom not to make any gay ships.
