As much as people like to parrot “ACAB” and consider their job done, most people– especially people raised with evangelical values– have not done the work of unlearning legalism and understanding morality through the lens of actual harm.

To these people “legal” equals moral and good and “illegal” equals immoral and bad. They’re synonyms in their mind.

Which is why you can sometimes break their brains by reminding them that some fans write gay fanfiction in countries where being gay is very much still illegal.

It always seems to be based on their own country/region’s laws, in my experience. The age of consent in my country is 16 but pointing that out is seen as me trying to Knowingly Get Away With Being Gross, and my country’s law on this as Obviously Not A Legitimate Law. I’m so fucking done.

It’s both America-centric and not even well informed. There are lots of places in the USA where the age of consent is lower than 18.

And fandom censors get real mad when you point that out.
