“Queer coded” is when a writer deliberately uses subtle but obvious cultural tells to inform the audience that their character is meant to be queer, without openly stating that they are queer.

This is done to present a queer character to an audience in a situation where portraying queer characters is taboo or forbidden, such as under the Hayes code, or in countries where being queer is illegal.

As wikipedia states: “Queer coding involves attributing stereotypically queer traits without explicitly stating gender and sexual identity.”
