Getting started writing when you first sit down to write and there’s a blank page– whether for a new story, a new chapter, etc– that’s the hardest part of writing for me.

This is why I find it easier to write with a partner, or to write in response to a prompt, than to just sit down and start writing. Having that little push of a beginning– even if it’s just an expectation– makes it easier to write.

A response is easier than a beginning.

I suppose the real secret would be to trick the mind into thinking it’s responding when it’s actually beginning.

In medias res can be good for that. Just start in the middle of the action as if you were responding to something that came before.

Another way is to put pressure on yourself with a timer. “Write something on the page in 15 minutes or else.”
