Sorry if you’ve been asked this before! How long does your writing process generally take? I saw you post that 25k fic and it blows my mind! Was that part of a longer process, or was it a massive spark of creativity? I’ve been wanting to get back into writing again (I haven’t in years), but I never feel like I can write enough compared to when I was younger (I average about 800 words in longer writing sessions, and it really amazes me to see fic writers who can manage high word counts!)
Hey friend! We’re always happy to talk and answer questions about writing!
First of all, I want to say 800 words in a session is a great wordcount, especially if you can work on your consistency! 800 words a day will get you to 80k in just 100 writing sessions, and that’s a respectable length for a novel!
Our writing output is on the high (though not the extreme) end. When we write, we average about 2000-3000 words a session. When we’re writing with our partner (which is often) the total wordcount of our output usually goes to about 4-5k per session.
Here are some caveats on that wordcount:
- it’s only when we actually sit down to write. We go through long stretches of writing absolutely nothing, or nothing but 100 word drabbles.
- We have been writing since 2002, and 2500 words was our target goal for fanfiction chapters when we started writing.
- We have good focus– when we’re “on”. When we’re having an off day, we can’t focus for shit and get nothing done.
- we’re extremely privileged to have the ability to sit down and write any time we’re feeling motivated.
- We’re bipolar, and often a mania or hypomania is at the root of our writing output.
- we are married to our writing partner, and writing is one of our primary love languages and ways we interact with one another on a daily basis.
As I said, 800 words per session is actually a great start. I’d work on improving your consistency if you can. Check out writing “pomodoros” or “word sprints” which are essentially the same technique to allow you to focus on writing, while still giving you the freedom to take care of tasks and let your mind wander.
