I treasure all authors and all ways of writing– but I sometimes feel like I’m the only writer in fandom who actually starts longfic with the plot.
Like if I just have miscellaneous character vibes and feelings I write a drabble or a quick scene to get it out there. You don’t need a lot of set-up in fanfiction to get to the scene you want to do– the canon IS the set up.
So when I’m writing a big, intricate, plot heavy fic it’s because I had an idea for a long, intricate plot.
An idea such as characters are so separated by fate and canon that they need 100k words of rube goldberg machine to get them to the point where it makes sense for them to kiss.
What if Character A and Character B who are very close to one another in canon and have a lot of tension made out and were angsty about it?
Boom. Easy. 500 word scene slipped straight into canon, or shoved at the end after the credits roll. Requires absolutely no set up.
What if this man was so overtaken by grief for the loss of his best-friend/lover he was possessed by his spirit and started to become a different person altogether?
Requires a trilogy of 3 100k fics to get out there.
