Chris Claremont absolutely did intend for Sabretooth to have been Wolverine’s father.
Larry Hama, who took over writing the characters, change this so that the ‘father/son’ idea was part of the MK-ultra-esque brainwashing that both of them underwent as forced members of Team X during the 70s.
Hama also made Silverfox’s death part of the brainwashing, and revealed that she was really alive and Sabretooth didn’t kill her.
But ever since Wolverin Origins (the comic) came out, everyone has ignored that.
