When reading fanfic keep in mind that for professional literature:
- Short story: under 7,500
- Novelette: between 7,500 and 17,500
- Novella: between 17,500 and 40,000
- Novel: over 40,000
Fics over 40k are literally a novel written and shared for free. If you have written a 40k+ fic, you have literally written a novel.
Yep. In addition, chapters in published novels are generally around 3,000 words in length.
Fanfic writers go hard.
This is encouraging.
Wow, I have read So Many Free Novels! My head spins at the fact that a story over 40K words is a novel. FanFic authors are a Huge benefit to society, and to my mental health in particular! Any of you writers on Tumblr who don’t have a Ko-fi, Patreon, or other donation link, please consider it. You deserve it!
hi, as cool as it is to suggest monetizing a hobby or passion, there are serious legal issues involved in writing fanfiction for money. we’ve been able to forget or ignore a lot of these issues because of the awesome legal groundwork The Archive Of Our Own’s legal team has done on our behalf, and because in recent decades companies have figured out that they profit more from allowing fanworks to proliferate than in vigorously defending their claims to their IP. however when writers start making a significant amount of money off their fanfic, they actually start directly competing with the rights’ holders claim to their own intellectual property, and those holders actually have a legal obligation to defend themselves, or risk losing their claim to that property. making money off of fanfiction is necessarily a black market situation because you absolutely cannot do this legally and if you are caught by the people who own the properties you’re profiting off of, they have to shut you down.
this is why archive sites like Archive Of Our Own are allowed to operate only as nonprofits that catalogue transformative work: no one involved in the operation is out to make money. you absolutely categorically can not use the Archive’s infrastructure as a commercial base, without endangering the entire site.
in conclusion: if you’re making money off of your fanfiction, shut the fuck up. no you aren’t. and if i catch you using AO3 to make money, i will squeal on you at supersonic speeds. do not shit in our collective goddamn bed.
