If I had a nickel for every time fans of a game that has a clearly India-coded fake nation in it insist the country is supposed to be China, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice

If we’re talking about Kura’in it’s definitely meant to be reflective of (a stereotypical view of) Tibet. But you’re absolutely right here that the depiction pulls way more from Indian culture than Chinese, and it’s honestly baffling to me that people don’t understand that.

Like, do people not get the (stereotypical and uncomfortable) vibes that Tahrust Inmee trial is putting off??

Yeah, for sure. I’m not super familiar with all the cultural influences for these countries but yeah now that I think, Tibet is probably a big influence, like it’s definitely pulling from a lot of locations (I think there’s also some stuff from Nepal and so on) but I just, like… China has such a distinct culture and vibe that does not match up at all! I don’t get it. Is it ignorance of other nations? Is it colorism or racism? Who knows.

I think it’s a double problem.

I think that western players are extremely unfamiliar with the differences between cultures outside of western regions, and are unable to recognize the actual origin of tropes and elements from specific cultures. So they make incorrect assumptions on the origin of those tropes and elements.

But I think the other part of the problem is that the game devs made absolutely no attempt at depicting the culture of Kura’in with dignity or realism, instead relying on a mish mash of lot of different xenophobic and exoticized tropes and stereotypes.
