As a narumitsu shipper, the main issue I have with narumitsu fanon is how contradictory it can often be with the actual text of the games.

Aside from general mischaracterization and flanderization, the major idea I take issue with is the fanon that Miles and Phoenix obviously have a deeply committed, consistent relationship, or even live together and co-parent Trucy.

It’s a very romantic idea, and unfortunately canon just completely smashes it to pieces.

I was strongly reminded of this fact while I was playing Turnabout TIme Traveller.

In Turnabout Time Traveller– and this is consistent with every time that Miles and Phoenix meet with one another in the games– Miles’ and Phoenix’s dialogue explicitly indicates that they haven’t seen one another for months, and don’t know exactly what the other has been up to.

Every time Miles and Phoenix see one another in the games, they have to take a few minutes and catch up with one another and how their lives are going (as well as exchange a few barbs and insulting banter.)

This is a consistent trend. Miles and Phoenix don’t see one another often– or at least, during the timeframe that the games take place, they are not currently seeing one another often. These are not performative conversations– there’s no one else around that they have to pretend they’re not seeing each other if it’s the case.

Could they be spending lots of time together outside of the timeframe of the games, for instance, during the seven year gap? Surely, yes! But that still leaves us with long stretches of time during the span of the games that they haven’t seen one another and don’t know what each other are doing.

Headcanons are always fine and wonderful, but if you want a narumitsu relationship that is consistent with the text of the games, you need to accept that Miles and Phoenix have an incredibly on-again-off-again relationship with long stretches of time where they just straight up don’t know where the other one is or what they’re doing.
