Kristoph is a very interesting character, even when we’re looking at something so simple as his name in the original language.
Sure, there’s the thing of reading his name backwards (as ひときり) and in result we get a word that means “assassin”, but should take a look how his name IS written. It contains kanji for “fog” (霧) and “person” (人). Do you remember that scene?
We never learned what his secrets were, they were hidden deep in his subconsciousness and there was no proof that would help to learn more about him and his motives. I honestly doubt that he would be brought back into the series, so it’s something that we need to figure out on our own. The only hint we got are Phoenix’s words: “dark, cold, full of despair”. In my opinion, killing Enigmar for picking Phoenix over him in a game of poker is too shallow and there’s probably a deeper reason he did what he did. What if, for example, someone (other than him) killed his and Klavier’s parents and this person is a free man, because they were defended by Phoenix himself?
We can also read his Black Psyche-Locks as simply telling Phoenix: fuck off, you won’t get any info from me, forget it;
or that he’s broken to the point you can’t do anything about it and opening his Psyche-Locks would lead you nowhere, because you can’t “save” him.
…Well, whatever. I’m just overthinking, like I usually do.
I have some other personal theories about why he might have killed Enigmar, but I have to say the idea of it being revenge against Phoenix for letting his parents killer walk free is definitely a compelling one.
I think you’re absolutely right that the canon is too shallow. I can’t believe we didn’t get to dig deeper into this.
Some time ago I saw an interesting theory that his motive for killing Zak was that he would abandon Trucy anyway. Well, it makes sense at some point, because Zak probably would tell his attorney about the judge being unable to give a proper verdict, because of his act of disappearance. I personally have a fic idea for Kristoph killing Zak, because Phoenix told him about Apollo and Zak was pissed off, and Kris was afraid that Zak would hurt his beloved student.
Oh! It might have been my post that you saw about that theory, or else someone else had the same idea. Because my headcanon is that he killed Zak over abandoning Trucy!
I definitely like finding a reason to connect the murder to Apollo though, since that’s such an obvious emotional connection.
