Apollo looked around the partially decorated office as he strolled inside. It was already resembling the one he’d studied in as Mr. Gavin’s assistant– despite the fact that this new office was in the prosecutorial building.
“I still can’t believe you were able to get your sentence so heavily revised,” Apollo murmured. He smiled rubbing his neck as he watched Kristoph straighten up from behind the desk. He’d been taking desk toys out of a small cardboard box.
“It’s a little like a dream, isn’t it?” Kristoph smiled back. “But owing to ‘new information coming to light’, and a retrial under Phoenix’s jurist system and a favorable jury… Here we are. Fifteen years community service and a strict parole. Well–it’s not like my failing to draw a salary from prosecution will hurt the Gavin family coffers at all.”
Apollo chuckled awkwardly and leaned on Kristoph’s desk. “Yeah I guess not. Pretty funny how it was a jurist trial that….”
Kristoph shook his head. “It only goes to show how fickle the will of the people can be, Mr. Justice. Evidence is everything in terms of fact, but it’s not the only thing that sways the human heart.”
“Do you think it’ll ever be implemented permanently? Apollo asked curiously.
"I heard Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth discussing the idea that it might be implemented by appeal after a verdict in an initial bench trial,” Kristoph explained. “A bit like a medical second opinion.”
“That might be for the best,” Apollo nodded. There was something scary about the idea of every case being built on perception and opinion rather than solid evidence. “Anyway, uh, your office is looking nice? Reminds me of your old one.”
Kristoph laughed. “That’s because everything but the furniture is from my old office, Apollo. I haven’t exactly had much leeway to redecorate yet.”
Apollo felt his ears heat up and he chuckled along with his old boss. It was hard not to fall into the old pattern of when he’d worked under him– and part of him didn’t even want to try to stop himself.
“I guess so, sir. Can I help you set up, or anything?"
Kristoph cooked a finger, beckoning him forward. "You can come here.”
Apollo obeyed without thinking, almost stumbling over himself as he made his way around the desk to where Kristoph sat.
He gasped as his former boss grabbed his collar when he was just in range, and pulled him down into his lap pressing his lips against his. Apollo swooned into the kiss, and wrapped his arms around Kristoph’s shoulders.
Things might not be quite just like old times, but they were certainly looking up. Maybe not everyone would understand his feelings, but Apollo was so glad just to have Kristoph back.
