Hey, I saw some of the asks about fandom culture, and I obviously agree with a lot of the points, however it made me think about something. Since I’m a big LoL nerd and I’ve played the game for ages, I do enjoy a lot of fanfiction of any kind. However, I’ve noticed that people are against/offended because of K’sante x Fem! Reader, mostly because K’sante is canonically gay. Personally, since it’s fanfiction I could obviously care less if people make a character straight, queer or trans, even if canonically they are cis or straight or whatever, as long as they are having fun. I see a character from a fandom as some kind of blueprint, if that makes sense? Like here you have this concept of this character, but you kinda will add and remove whatever you like (that’s kind of what fanon is to me). However, over the years I did notice that it’s more widely accepted to make a cis/straight character trans/queer, and I can’t say the same is as accepted the other way around. I’m one of those people that believes that stuff should be a two way street, and that people should be allowed to do whatever they want with the “blueprint” (character), even if it means making them straight or cis. For me personally, my fanon (no matter the fandom) is that all characters are pansexual or bi, because that means I can explore any type of romance I want to write at the moment. But I’m really curious about your stance on the matter. What do you think about making a trans/queer character cis/straight for your own (and some people’s) enjoyment? Like I’ve said, I just want people to have fun with the characters they like or want as their fictional s/o.Sorry for the long ask, I didn’t know how to make it shorter!
Hey friend! <3 your question is long, but my answer is simple.
It’s always okay to change the details of a character’s canon in fanfiction.
This doesn’t change, whether you’re making them a vampire, forcing them to work at a coffee shop, or changing their sexuality or gender.
There’s nothing sacred about a character’s sexuality that somehow makes it the only detail about a character you’re never allowed to change in fanfiction.
If a character is “canonically gay” someone writing fanfiction where they’re straight doesn’t change that, any more than someone writing fanfiction where they’re a vampire or a barista changes their canon.
