The problem I’m having with Recipe for Turnabout is that I have no idea what what to make of Jean Armstrong.

Like, clearly this is supposed to be a typical mid-00s style casually homophobic joke. An effeminate, camp gay man who’s built like a brick shithouse.

But the reliance on the character’s mere existence as the joke is leaving me kinda floundering? Is this offensive? Should I be offended?

Because divorced from it’s cultural context… he’s just a dude. This is a type of dude I could expect to see on the street. He’s a camp bear.

And the complete lack of a joke besides people finding him to be a bit weird, in a series with weirder characters treated deathly seriously, is just…

I do not know how to feel about this character. It feels like this probably was offensive at some point but I don’t know if it still is? Which is weird? Stuff usually becomes more offensive as it gets older?

God I’m too fucking autistic for this.

Queer subtext and homophobic stereotypes in Ace Attorney is something I’ve been talking about a lot lately, and what I’ll say is this.

The character of Jean Armstrong doesn’t make me feel uncomfortable or offended.

The reaction that other characters have to Jean Armstrong sometimes makes me feel uncomfortable and offended.

He’s not somebody that other people in the narrative treat as “just some guy” – they largely treat him as being undesirable and off-putting due to his characterization.
