Oh boy…. I’m so sick of the “fanon = canon” trend modern fandom has established. I remember when I got kicked out of the attorney fandom in 2021 because I dared to say I read Miles Edgeworth as aroace because of part of the game’s text and because I’m aroace myself and he’s my fave. The ammount of attacks I got, being accused of homophobia, of being illiterate and flooded with the narumitsu manifesto is something that I’m never going to forget in my life. I even had to close my DMs and post replies because I was getting accused of “trying to impose my straightness into a queer character”, which in hindsight was fucking hilarious. No wonder the other anon was afraid to come back. If you basically go against the trifecta of “phoenix = bi, miles = gay and apollo = trans” get ready for the worst. I preferred the days of fanfic sporking and encyclopedia dramatica over this fandom policing.
I just think there needs to be less (read: none) attacking people over headcanons, theories, ideas and interpertations in general.
Sadly, this is not a new thing. Ship wars and headcanon wars have been going on in fandom forever– I can attest to them as far back as livejournal.
What modern social media has done is make them easier to spread and make them easier to make someone’s life completely miserable over.
It’s also made it way harder to avoid headcanons and ships that we’re not fond of. It used to be that there’d be different little communities that were discrete and on their own, but now they’re all packed into one fandom tag.
I miss the days back then too.
