“Phoenix. I didn’t expect you to be back so soon.”

Kristoph was smiling, and Phoenix felt a knot in his stomach. He didn’t like how much Kristoph could smile, even in prison. Of course, he probably felt like he had a lot to smile about, right at the moment.

“I can leave if you’d prefer,” Nick drawled in response.

“Absolutely not, my friend. I treasure your company– even if I’ve been having more visitors of late.”

I treasure your company. Something that Nick had heard a lot over the long seven years.

It stung like a slap– Kristoph standing there behind the bars and calling him his friend after everything.

“I don’t typically call murderers my friends, Kris. Or guys who have stabbed me in the back..” Phoenix lingered out of reach of the bars, though Kris was close to them.

Kristoph looked hurt– or at least he affected a hurt expression. “You don’t think we’re friends any more? We’ve been so many things, Phoenix. Rivals, friends, lovers– do you think we’re enemies? Or am I just nothing to you now?”

Nick struggled to find the answer.
