A note in the (dumb and ridiculous) feelings yakuza crusade against AO3. I found some books on fanfiction studies in my university library (super cool that such a thing exists) and all three of the books I checked out were involved in some way with OTW, either because the authors were a part of the organization or because they helped publish the book. OTW doesn’t just host AO3, they advocate for fandom and fannish creations in the legal and academic worlds, which is a large part of why they raise money (they often cover legal fees for fan creators who get into legal trouble, for example). OTW is one of the most important organizations in the fandom sphere and fancops want to throw that all away because “a home for all works” includes things they find personally distasteful.
It’s true!
Fancops believe– or pretend they believe– someone is getting rich on the AO3 money but that’s not what’s happening at all!
