The justification and normalization of harassment based off of “problematic content”doesn’t just affect problematic content, it negatively affects fandom creation as a whole.
Creating for fandom already has minimum barriers for accessibility, things like the financial means needed to afford a device to engage with social media in the first place, the energy and spoons needed, both physical and mental in order to create and be successful and plenty of other things I’m sure I’m missing.
Now that certain groups think harassment is okay and deserved if your content contains things that are “problematic” there are added barriers, you now need the spoons to defend and or prepare for your content to be retrospectively deemed problematic. One of the most popular ships with a humorous dynamic or slapstick humour could suddenly be interpreted in the worst faith possible and now you’re being harassed by a group or the whole fandom for being “an abuse apologist.” Or if a new reboot or re-imagining decides to take creative liberties for a character and ages them up, or down. You’re now suddenly okay with grooming or you’re a pedophile.
Like at this point it’s just safest and easier not create to any fan content at all. Even if it’s a “fluffy, safe ship.” Or if you do, not to share it because you don’t have the spoons to deal with some assholes who are mad that you don’t agree with their weird ass pathologies as why you like a fucking trope.
