god damn it do I have to get back into the creepypasta fandom again?
somebody give me a primer of what I’ve missed in the last 10 years.
Can’t tell you what’s happened in the last ten years in the fandom, but if you are coming back pls lmk because I am so lonely over here I need more proship Creepypasta friends to share my unhinged hcs with-
I was mostly into Slenderman (esspecially marble hornets and everymanhybrid), SCP, Ben Drowned back in the day as well as general creepypasta writing.
I feel like in the meantime some kind of big metauniverse has been built up in fandom?
Well sort of yes & also, kinda no?
The rise of the Mansion AU, very popular ask blogs, and fandom congregation has lead to the development of very prominent Fanon.
It was kind of like a game of telephone, as these things do often play out.
What started as inside jokes & one off memes, soon made their way into fandom proper & new people who had no idea these were jokes took them at face value & added this to their canon, & then they are passed on & on until suddenly no one has any idea where it all came from, it’s just there, & if you go against the established norms of the fandom some people get very very upset.
My advice is, ignore that. None of it matters. The meta canon of the fanon verse is all bullshit. & don’t go within 30,000 feet of the fandom proper if don’t want to engage with the fanon, especially as being behind on fanon is wild- because the things going on at the moment mind boggling-
If you really do want a run down of the general fanon + fandom drama that has happened in the last few years tho I can offer you a summary based entirely on my own memory of all prior incidents from about the last 7-ish years yo the best of my abilities!
Can you give me a rundown of what’s happened? I really need to get back into general creepypasta
I am always up for fandom history storytime, too.
I’ll probably disregard all of this with my own creepypasta fan stuff but I wanna know the fandom lore. 😂 @problem-shipper-backup
Alright! I suggest everyone sit down, grab a drink, & get comfortable because this is a long stream of conciousness essay about everything I remember from the entire time I’ve been in the Creepypasta Fandom!
None of this is fact checked, & all time frames are estimated, but this may serve as a good jumping off point for anyone interested in actual research!
–
Alright let’s start from the beginning.
It is, sometime in 2012 or 2013. I am in middle school, 11 or 12 years old. Myself & my bestfriend are at the public library to use their computers because she wants to show me a picture that she found that terrified her, just scared her shitless. & into google images she types “Jeff the killer”. The first image is seared into my mind. I’m sure we all know the one.
There he is, my first introduction to Creepypasta.
Now, I was not very scared by this picture, I think because it had been so hyped up as the scariest thing my friend had ever seen, but it was just, kinda off putting to me. (My friend however is still creeped out by this picture to this day!) But this was the single image that lead me into a rabbit hole I have yet to escape from!
While not scared, I was intrigued! So when I got home that day I decided to do some googling of my own, & on my family computer in the livingroom I searched up Jeff the Killer later that evening to find out more about this image. So yes, the first ever Creepypasta story I ever read was Jeff the killer, it was full of typos & I didn’t think it was exactly ~scary~ but as someone who was a well known scaredy cat, it made me feel really brave!
I hadn’t yet been introduced to the fandom yet, but I did discover, not long after first discovering Jeff the killer, YouTube channels dedicated to reading Creepypasta stories & as an unmedicated child with ADHD I found this a much better way to absorb these stories.
From Jeff the killer is was actually some less popular stories (in the fandom at least) that I remember finding. Mr. Widemouth, Candle Cove, & the Russian Sleep Experiment.
I actually remember going to my history teacher (who was pretty cool, he wore cool socks & played guitar) & telling him about The Russian Sleep Experiment because it had scared me so much. Of course he hadn’t heard of it because it wasn’t real, but he agreed he’d look into it for ne because he could tell it really bothered me, & the next day he came back, informed me that he had watched the video & while it was a scary story, it wasn’t real. Which was very relieving.
It wasn’t until after that that I got into Creepypasta proper. (Or rather the fandom at large)
I discovered the stories of what I like to call the Big Five (Jeff the killer, Laughing Jack, Eyeless Jack, Ticci-Toby, & Ben Drowned) the most popular characters in the fandom by a wide margin. I became very interested in ‘Origin Stories’ as well as discovering more characters.
This is the time period (2013 to 2014) that I remember getting into stores like Dr. Smiley, Slenderman vs Jeff, the Cupcakes mlp story (which did give me the creeps), Strangled Red (which imo is better than Glitchy Red yeah, I said it-) & quickly there after Marble Hornets. (I also started learned to draw at this time.)
[Now let’s take a short moment from my very fascinating story line of my journey through Creepypasta, to note the Fandom Drama that I heard in this time frame:
The creator of Laughing Jack was outst from the fandom for being a groomer (actually true)
The creator of Sally was outst from the fandom for drawing aged up nsfw of their own character. (I mean, maybe poor taste given the character was an 8 year old incest victim who was then murdered, but also not the terrible crime everyone acted like it was)
The creator of Ticci Toby left the Creepypasta fandom because he hated us for shipping his character with men.
Jane the Killer is a Lesbian drama starts now
The creator of I Eat Pasta for Breakfast (a very popular Creepypasta comic) is Problematic for shipping their OC with Eyeless Jack because she was a child in the beginning of the comic.
Also It Is Cool To Hate Female Creepypasta’s & Self Incerts is happening now
The very first time I was introduced to the concept of anti shipping happens at this time, on pinterest, under some reposted art of Jeff x Liu. I was confused because I liked Jeff x Liu & I couldn’t see why this person was looking at art, they didn’t like.
Back to the main story.]
It was the summer of 2014-ish. I was about to start high school. I am still obsessed with Creepypasta Backstories, but I can’t seem to find the Origin Stories for these 2 characters I see everywhere Masky & Hoody. So finally I managed to Google “Masky Creepypasta Backstory” & the first thing that appears is a YouTube channel.
I call this the Marble Hornets era of my time in the Creepypasta fandom. The previous era being the Introduction era.
In 2 days I binged the entire series (without totheark because I didn’t know it existed since YouTube had gotten rid of video responses). Also with my best friend (the one who introduced me to Creepypasta!).
I became fully obsessed with Marble Hornets. I lived & breathed Marble Hornets. I thought that everything in Marble Hornets was real & it caused me terrible anxiety & paranoia, it’s okay tho because I found out it wasn’t real & that helped.
The week before I started high school I got the Operator symptom shaved into the side of my head. (& that’s how I met my fiance!) For Christmas that year I got the entire Marble Hornets series on Bluray (because they were out of the DVD box set).
I tried to het into EverymanHybrid after finishing MH, but it wasn’t MH so I didn’t like it the first time I watched it.
Enter the famous Mansion AU.
Enter also, my new obsession, the Sexual Offenderman.
I call this era, the I’m Right, You’re Wrong era. In which I took up the mantle of politely telling people that Masky & Hoody were in fact, not Creepypasta Characters, but came from Marble Hornets a Slenderverse series that was very good & if you want to know more about them you should watch it. & most people did not take kindly to this information & got very very mad at me & I had no idea why people would not want to know more about the characters the claimed to like so much. It was always a slap in the face when people would tell me I was wrong about something I was in fact, not wrong about. This era lasted for a few months before I gave up entirely.
[Fandom drama I remember around this time:
The MH creators split up due to creative differences
Ben Drowned being black & white & smokes weed
Thinking Dark Link is a Creepypasta
Jane is a Lesbian gets worse.
Masky & Hoody are obsessed with cheesecake is extremely popular & people are really starting to try & curb the spread of this fanon as it started from fatphobic memes
The “Hey Masky”/Waffles!!!/st-st-st-stutter characterization of Ticci-Toby peaks here
Bact to the story]
The time period of 2015/2016 is what I like to call Peak Wattpad era in Creepypasta. There is very little Creepypasta fic on Ao3 & that’s because it’s all on Wattpad (& DA but I wasn’t very active there). Thousands of mansion AU fics & x Readers pop up on Wattpad. I also try my hand at writing my first Creepypasta stories at this point & making my first characters. (A story I wrote is actually published on the official Creepypasta website, sadly as a ‘crappy pasta’ which on one hand was cool but on the other hand really hurt my feelings because I worked hard on that story & they basically told me it sucked-)
In 2017/2018 I fell out of the fandom slightly as I was busy with other things at time, but I did get back into writing fanfiction because of stories I started in in 2015/16 & gave my first real attempt at writing an actual novel (I get about 40k I think but never finished it, which yeah-) this is also the time period in which i start trying to make a comic but it’s never finished either.
[Big drama I remember from high school:
Several Creepypasta story readers are accused of grooming, most are proven innocent but I’m pretty sure 1 or 2 were actually guilty
The creator of TribeTwelve is proven to be a groomer, a big blow to the Slenderverse fandom
EMH ended & it was very confusing-
Push to make Creepypasta “scary” again happens here]
Now we’ve made it to tumblr! I made a tumblr in 2019 to post about my Creepypasta stuff as encouraged by my partner. & holy shit was I surprised by some of the things I saw here, that I had never seen anywhere else-
Things I saw on tumblr for the very first time after being in the fandom for years:
Ticcimask (Ticci-Toby x Tim/Masky) is pedophilia
Liking the Offenderman makes you an abuse apologist
Aging up characters is Bad
The worst Jane discourse I’d ever seen (which was saying something because I had seen a lot)
I had to stop & take a huge step back & just go “What???” It was appalling, it was frightening, it was terrible for my mental health. I was dropped into what felt like ground zero of Anti hell & I had barely ever even heard anti ship talking points before joining tumblr- & as someone who was in the Creepypasta fandom because I loved dark content I really couldn’t understand the complete rejection of dark content & taboo themes.
Still I started writing & posting things, I made some friends, I kept to myself, I blocked half the fandom after a harrassment campaign was held against me-
& then, the Ticci Toby drama happened.
After years of radio silence in the Creepypasta fandom, the creator of Ticci-Toby reared his face again & said “I’m taking my character back, you can’t use him anymore or I’ll sue you.” & the fandom, exploded- the fandom was completely divided- half of the people said “we should respect the creator & stop using Toby” the other half said “he’s homophobic & Toby’s ours now anyway, I’m not giving him up” it was probably the most chaotic week I’d spent in any fandom.
Some people suggested just using X-Virus since he was a Ticci-Toby spin off character. Someone made an entirely new character, called Third Base & encouraged people to use that character instead which surprisingly some people actually did.
& then at the end 90% of the fandom just decided to pretend it never happened & went on using Toby like normal.
The fandom quieted down after that for a while.
There was another hate campaign for people who used Offenderman, but I had already blocked most of those people so I didn’t really see it.
I saw more Jane is a Lesbian & can only be a Lesbian & if you dare make her not a Lesbian you Hate Lesbians & should explode. Which I thought was dumb af.
I kinda slowly faded out if the fandom because ngl it kinda sucks if you don’t agree with popular fanon, & I have my own hcs so I don’t get along with a lot of people there, so I haven’t been keeping up with the fandom much.
Very recently the creator of Judge Angels (a character I never got into) was kicked out of the fandom for being into Loli & people flipped out about how the character is dressed for the first time ever. No one ever cared before that she was wearing a short dress, but now apparently if you draw her in her canon outfit you are a pedo.
And that’s my history of Creepypasta entirely from my own memory :3.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk uwu
Wow. That is so much drama. I’m genuinely astounded.
Thank you so much for recounting this, what I wild ride.
Can’t say I’m sorry to have missed all of it– wattpad era especially 😂😂😂
