the first time you read a book by an author and it’s boat-centric you’re like, “oh, this is the boat episode of the police procedural” and then you get to the next and there’s more boats and you’re like, “i guess this was the popular mode of travel at the time” and then the next one after that has a gratuitous speedboat chase where the boat in question is described in the manner of a lover long-gone but never forgotten and you just have to accept that this dude just fucking loves boats despite writing a protagonist who is, at best, respectfully ambivalent towards boats
“Me? Love boats? No, not at all. You’re going to have to describe to me this boat, in great detail, in order for me to solve this mystery.”
