excerpt:
He stood, and his slender form suddenly loomed over me. He waved a gracious hand again. “It was ruined before you saw it. My cloak will cover any immodesty for the moment. It is no great hardship.”
As he spoke, he picked up his cape from where he had draped it over the sofa, and I watched him move to swing it around his shoulders– but stop as he realized the motion it would require from his injured arm. He made a sour expression and I spoke.
“May I help you with that, sir?”
A thin slice of his smile returned, and he turned, offering it to me. “You’re a most gracious host as you are a medic, I see.”
“I… do my best, sir,” I offered, helping tug the cape around his narrow shoulder,s and clasping it for him. It was only after I had done so that I realized to my chagrin that the metal shanks that adorned his waistcoat could easily have done the same. How polite of him, to allow such and overeager creature to assist him with a triviality.
As if to punctuate this thought, one of the slim little limbs snatched out from beneath the cloak and grabbed his hat, fixing it atop his head. What a sinister figure he made for, all done up and finished this way, especially with the mask, shaded by the brim of his hat.
