Just ran across a vid of Wesker cutscenes from RE5 and felt obliged to speak my piece about why he’s a tragic character. Ok, ok, ok, I know that almost every RE blog has this post, but I just have to contribute my own ok?

the flashbacks that tell us the truth are from the perspective of him dwelling on what happened at the Spencer Estate. even though he’s still going through with his plan, its nagging at the back of his mind, seemingly all the time. he found out too late what had been done to him, how none of his life was ever really his. he was forced to question everything he thought was right. his every goal was planted in his head by Spencer, who was only going to use him. that’s when he spiraled out of control. everyone says that RE5 ruined his character, but really he was just different because he found out that everything he was working towards was still for Umbrella, even though he fought so hard to break free of them. he still has his beliefs, but he doesn’t trust himself that they’re his. he thought what he was doing was for the ‘greater good’, but in reality it was just for the same corporate greed. the truth of the driving force of his actions was human greed. humans as a whole might have been what he hated most, but the reasons for everything he’s done was all the horrible, selfish, undeniably human greed of one man. maybe he regretted the things he’d done, knowing the truth, but he was in too deep. he didn’t see a way out. no matter how much he tried, he couldn’t know with any certainty that any of himself was really him. because no one had ever asked him about himself, or cared what he thought. he had been used, for violence, for destruction, for results. the only positive reinforcement he ever got was when he accomplished something. he never knew love, because no on ever loved him, and he never got the chance to love anyone. he might have felt guilt, but he didn’t know what to do with it. he didn’t know how to fix anything, so he did the only thing he thought could get him out. he must have known that his plan would never work. from what is shown, Uroboros has to be injected or has to come into contact with an open wound, so it wouldn’t spread as a gas. and the moment in the back of the plane, when he and Chris have their guns pointed right at each other’s heads. Chris doesn’t shoot because part of him still sees his captain. Wesker doesn’t shoot because on a subconscious level, he wants Chris to win. the whole impossible plan is all a way for him to destroy Spencer’s plans. he wants to drive all of Spencer’s work into the ground. and he’s part of Spencer’s work. he had to have known that Uroboros would be unstable, but he took it anyways. he was falling apart from the viruses he already had, the way he need those injections from Excella. and the way he was acting by the point he’s getting on the plane, isn’t like he thinks he’s coming back. he got rid of Excella. everyone he’d ever worked with was dead. he had no way of telling that they weren’t part of Spencer’s manipulation. so they all had to go. hell, why was the plane in the perfect position to fall into an ACTIVE VOLCANO? he knew exactly where he would end up when he got on the plane.
