I’d just like to add that when antis complain about “proship dogwhistles” 9/10 they have absolutely fallen for terf/fascist dogwhistles hook line and sinker multiple times without batting an eye at whatever ideology they’ve just swallowed uncritically.
The thing about a dogwhistle is that when you use one, you are trying to get a message across to a specific group of people whilst hiding your intended meaning from everyone else. For example, when terfs say they’re “gender critical”, what they really mean is that they don’t think gender exists at all; They think biological sex is all that matters, and they think it can determine who you are as a person, which is why they’re comfortable casting trans women as predatory men. They want to gain new terfs by disguising it as something more reasonable first, and you don’t learn the truth about the group until it’s too late to get out. It’s a well-known cult tactic.
Another example is radical conservative types using “pedophile” as an anti-gay dogwhistle, persecuting queer people under the guise of “protecting the children!!!” Remember when Drag Queen Story Hour was absolutely pulled apart by conservatives when a single drag queen was accused of child predation, when the same people never once spoke out about all the priests molesting altar boys in the Catholic church? They don’t care about children, they care about being lgbtphobic.
Now, when a proshipper says they’re anti-harassment as a dogwhistle, what message could they be disguising underneath that term?
Well, when I hear proshippers say they’re “anti-harassment” what they actually mean…is that they’re anti-harassment. Most people who say that just don’t think harassment is okay, no matter the target. It’s not like harassment changes “bad” people into “good” people, so the only reason you could want to harass someone is that you just want to lash out at them and get a high off of destroying people you perceive as “bad”, which could technically be anyone depending on the type of person you are. People who are pro-harassment are just not safe people to hang out with.
Huh. Funny, that. It’s almost like antis accuse proshippers of using a dogwhistle to make their “pro-fiction” argument more credible when we’re very open about the fact that we’re pro-fiction anyway and have no reason to hide it, meanwhile, antis are the ones who use their “anti-pedophilia” stance to lure in unsuspecting new members who then go through the radicalization process so that they can get more people to harass and destroy the people who talk about pedophilia realistically and take real steps to minimize harm to people in fandom by talking openly about abuse and tagging their shit properly and teaching people how to curate their own internet experience to avoid things that make them uncomfortable.
But what do I know? I’m just a proshitter borderline p3dophile who deserves no pity or mercy, right?
