Re: “fiction doesn’t affect reality” idk if there’s a word for this type of behavior, but back when this all started, antis had all kinds of arguments and bullshit takes about things like “condoning fictional child porn/partaking in ageplay + CGL is going to condition someone to get sexually aroused when exposed to childlike behavior and therefore become a pedophile” or the age old “violent media makes a person more violent and aggressive” and pro-ship arguments to these takes were “no, it doesn’t work like that, fiction doesn’t affect reality”. There was That One Post that specifically talked about Jaws and the panic in incited and pros brought up that Jaws didn’t give people a fear of sharks- it preyed upon the preexisting fear of sharks that lived in the public conscious’ head due to recent shark attacks. Over time, antis acted as though all these nuanced counter arguments to their shitty takes just boiled down “fiction doesn’t affect reality” and have twisted the context of the original counter argument, striping it of its nuance, and now you have antis acting as though they’re the ones who have believed that “fiction can affect reality because it can act as a mirror to the sociopolitical standards/themes of the time/a reflection of the author’s beliefs and obviously a proshitter’s beliefs are pedophila and incest.” Basically they took our own words, twisted them around/recontextualized them and have claimed them as their own. But “fiction doesn’t affect reality” was NOT an anti talking point at the start of shipping discourse; they argued vehemently against it and all their arguments just sounded like the Satanic Panic 2.0, with Satan being replaced with Problematic Shipping/Media.
idk if there’s a word for this type of behavior,
I’d call it “bullshit” but its also definitely “moving the goalposts.”
Typical fancop behavior.
