There are absolutely many writers for whom this happens, but there are just as many who think the idea is complete nonsense.

Again, the level of autonomy that a character has, and what that autonomy means, is different for every creator.

I’m not trying to push a narrative, I’ve just been writing and rping for decades, and in my experience this type of character autonomy is common in the some creative populations and extremely uncommon in others.

Especially in online circles where the goal is to be professionally published, there is a LOT of pushback to the idea that characters are ever outside of a writer’s control
