In our experience, and in the one of some others we know, there’s a sort of in-between stage between headmate and character. They’re not completely an indepent person, and not completely a character, and whether they stay that way or end up becoming a proper person tends to depend on how you treat them. Of course, I’m NOT saying it’s like that for everyone, but it’s happened quite a few times to us and people close to us. – Klara
