I don’t get antis sometimes. If you are uncomfortable about a trope, having people be unafraid to be open about said trope benefits you! If everyone can be honest about what they like, it reduces the chances that your friend of five years admits to being a closet fan of the trope you can’t stand.
If you want to avoid every human being that has ever thought positively about a trope, than bullying them into silence is not the way to go about that.
But that isn’t what you want is it. It isn’t about your comfort. Its about our discomfort.
It’s about controlling other people so that nothing that makes them personally uncomfortable exists. 😔
I agree, but I don’t think that goal specifically is even possible.
The best antis can realistically do is to get most fans to hide that they like said tropes. Which hurts people wanting to avoid certian types of people in the long run.
Oh definitely agree it’s not possible. But critical thinking and realizing that is not fancops’ strong point.
Honestly as a former anti I can tell you that they genuinely think that the tropes they don’t like cause harm.
They think that if people enjoy problematic things in fiction, then they’ll either downplay people’s trauma or get weirdly voyeuristic and ask invasive details about people’s trauma for their entertainment or something.
That was the idea that got me back then, at least.
They think they’re doing good, and that their discomfort with stuff like incest, rape, and abuse in a purely fictional context is a sign that they’re good people. Anybody who seeks out that sort of thing is a potential predator, even if they express disgust at those things in real life.
For many antis, that’s enough of a red flag to call someone a closeted (insert bad thing). They won’t take any chances by trying to defend them, because what if they turn out to be wrong, and they do end up being as horrible as people thought they were?
Even without the threat of being called an (insert bad thing) apologist, that would be a massive stain on their conscious. Nobody wants to side with a (insert bad thing)! Especially not on the internet, where your past misdeeds follow you forever, and could be brought up at any time.
There’s more to it than that, but that’s the general gist of why they won’t leave people alone.
