I was traumatized by a piece of media I saw when I was 10, and it still triggers me to this day. I understand that my recovery is no one’s responsibility but my own. How do I get better (without therapy)?
I’m sorry you’re hurting, anon.
Being traumatized by a piece of media sucks. It’s something we’ve experienced too.
Please remember that being traumatized does not make you broken. We all go through life changes by the things we experience and sometimes those experiences are painful ones.
Accepting that you’re traumatized and can be triggered by something is an important step.
Remember that you are not obligated to become comfortable with the thing that hurt you in order to heal.
It’s okay to want to avoid the thing that hurt you forever.
If that’s what you want to do, it’s okay. You can block the piece of media, block people who talk about it.
Create a firm boundary with people in your real life who talk about the media. You can say “I am not telling you to stop talking about this piece of media, but for my own mental health if you do it around me I will have to leave.”
If you want to become more comfortable with the media, and feel like desensitizing yourself to it will be healing for you, that’s also okay.
A good way to do that is to re-experience the media while you are in a comfortable place and with a person you trust. Don’t do it alone.
And if and when therapy is something you have access to, I do recommend trying therapy and seeing if it helps you.
