How do you feel about most news sites saying that games like GTA are “misogynistic” because of the female NPCs in the game (specifically the prostitutes and hookers) and basically treating fictional women as if they are real women being exploited? I ask because I’m a woman who plays GTA5 and I just don’t see how that game is misogynistic, but I’m curious on what you guys think!
I think that articles like that lack context and are created to clickbait people with moral outrage.
The GTA games, especially the modern ones, are about horrible people across the board. They are a reflection of society at its worst.
Every character is the worst possible interpretation of their type of person. We see every character in a terrible light.
Characters in GTA are lazy, stupid, greedy, trashy, jealous, angry and petty. Just, all of them, every character.
So of course the women come off as misogynistic stereotypes, and the men come off as misogynists.
Every character in the games is a negative stereotype.
Its because everyone is portrayed as an awful person.
And people who think that fiction should never portray women as terrible people– or never portray misogynistic men– are stupid. Those people are stupid.
Terrible, petty, stupid, greedy people exist. Some of those people are women.
Men who treat women like garbage exist.
Trying to force fiction to pretend like those people don’t exist is stupid at best an dangerous at worst.
ETA: Also, sex workers like hookers and strippers are cool people who deserve dignity and respect, and part of that dignity and respect is allowing them to be portrayed in fiction.
