Seeing people freak out over high schooler age gaps makes me 😬 bc I personally have dated as the younger in an age gap a good while ago [before 18] and I was fine. I mean I wasn’t *fine* because the other party got depressed and reclusive and the breakup was slow and a little painful but that’s just regular relationships not working out shit. I didn’t explode from bigger number. And it was a less acceptable age gap but I see people freaking out over 3 years and even 1-2.
And idk it rubs me the wrong way bc I know if I saw that back then, I’d be very offended. And also like. There is a reason we in the USA (which is ironically where all this purity bs comes from) have Romeo and Juliet laws. And the reason is that like 16 and 19 is not some massive gap of any sort. The reason is that 17 and 18 can reasonably be in school together complaining at each other about their essay grades.
It’s also deeply annoying that Americans act like our country is the good and moral center of the world when, in fact, different countries and cultures have different rules around dating and whatnot. Some places the aoc is 18, some 16, some 17, some like 20. The real actual truth is that there is no universal point in time where it is right or wrong to be with someone, but you can make resonable arguments about power imbalances based on a person’s legal rights and social status, and even at times level of knowledge about the world which absolutely is often based on age. But listen. Listen to me. If you actually think there is some major difference between a 16 year old and an 18 year old or an 18 year old and a 20 year old you need. You NEED to meet more real actual people in the real world.
