Im gonna come in with my own spicy take on parental rightsMy mother is an avid reader, she will not stop telling the story of the time she accidentally dropped a book on my head when i was a babyShe never once restricted what i read, but if it was something perhaps a bit more questionable for my age, like when i wanted to read IT in the fifth grade, she just gave me a content warning, for both the horror and the sexShe didn’t try to keep me from reading IT, she didn’t ban IT, she didn’t try to have IT removed from my school’s library (if it was even there), she just gave me a warningHell, when i didn’t take the warning and still read IT, she didn’t stop me.That’s how parents should treat their children’s reading material if they think they might be too young or immature
I think it would be wonderful if all parents were like that. That’s very much the right approach. Well, aside from dropping the book on your head. 😉
