Love (hate) that AO3 and NaNoWriMo– two nonprofits that started as grassroots organizations of creatives banding together and creating a community– are both currently under attack.

Are there valid concerns about how the organizations are run? Sure, absolutely. As with any organization once it gets large enough.

But if you cannot see the harm in bandwagoning and witch hunting against two of the largest promoters of creative free expression, writing and literacy during this time of increasing book banning and censorship– then I have to wonder if you’re actually thinking about it.

Not sure what’s going on with either right now and the way I google things is not giving me updated information. Anyone have an idea on what’s specifically going on with either or both? Ao3 I just kind of assume it’s the same shit, different day, different hat.

What’s up with NaNoWriMo, someone on Instagram was talking about it but gave absolutely no googleable information and got angry when I legitimately and sincerely asked for followup instead of just accepting that Everyone Should Stop Going to NaNoWriMo based on literally nothing presented by him.

NaNoWriMo

Individual moderators accusing one another of (variously) racism and inappropriate internet interactions with teenagers led to people calling for the entire staff to be investigated.

When the board did shut down the forums to investigate the staff, then people got mad that the forums were shut down.

Its a clusterfuck.

AO3

Currently: Board accused of inappropriately censoring an individual moderator’s right to declare their personal support of Palestine through official organization communications.

Previously/ongoing: People big mad AO3 won’t moderate their content beyond what they legally are mandated to.

It’s a clusterfuck.
