let’s talk about the phrase “chilled to the bone” because I don’t think we truly appreciate it as a society
you see, it’s not just cold. it’s deep cold that sinks in so deeply that it’s soaked through muscle, and now it rests in the deepest part of them. warmth is barely a memory. and it doesn’t matter how much they wrap up or how many layers they burrow under—the heat can’t reach within.
maybe the feeling is a result of a fever, their body’s wires crossed and convincing them they’re freezing to death even as they’re burning up under four blankets.
maybe it’s from being out in the elements too long, the cold and wet icing over their bones so deeply that they’re too stiff to shiver, and lingering long after coming into the warmth.
maybe it’s from an illness or injury that’s left them so weak and frail that they can’t keep themselves warm enough anymore, and they spend hours in front of the fire just to be barely comfortable.
it’s just the kind of cold they can’t shake no. matter. what.
