Speaking of Whump, I remember seeing some people at least talk about the idea of alternative terms for whump. Do you know if anything came of that?or I guess if you have any idea what someone who can’t keep the whump terms straight should use ’cause they all just blend into one word and I can’t tell one from another ( ̄w ̄;I think it’s why I barely touch the community when I really fit right in and would be all over it otherwise “fear of fucking up”™Hope you’re all doing well today and had a better morning by the way. you deserve good mornings
Thank you very much. I’m having a lovely morning so far this morning. You’ve inspired me to brew another pour over.
I’m actually not familiar with the terminology discussion you mention! I know that there are a lot of people who find the term whump/whumper/whumpee somewhat silly or hard to take seriously (frankly I can understand why). Was this a recent discussion, or something further back in fandom? I know the term “whump” has been around since the early Stargate fandom.
At this point given how long the term has been in use I think that it would take a really significant effort to change it.
For keeping the terms straight I think really there’s only three you absolutely need to know, and it makes sense when you consider the linguistics behind it.
whump: (verb) the act of whumping. To cause to suffer.
whumper: (noun) a person who does the act of whumping. A person who causes suffering.
whumpee: (noun) the person who endures the act of whumping. A person who suffers.
Now consider the following verbs: Dedicate, present, appoint, delegate, permit
consider the following acting nouns: Dedicator, presenter, appointer, delegater, permitter
consider the following passive nouns: dedicatee, presentee, appointee, delegatee, permittee
Does that make sense?
If its other whump terminology you have difficulty with, let me know and I’ll see if I can help.
