Mitsurugi took the bear and went to find Itonokogiri, and they investigated the origins of the bear together.

In Saraba, Gyakuten (Farewell, My Turnabout), Itonokogiri helps Naruhodou and Harumi figure out that Fujimino’s hotel room had been planted with a spy camera. And then, he decided to help by investigating the origins of the camera, to see if they can figure out who bought it. It might take all night, but he’s determined to do it, and promises Naruhodou that he’ll have the answer by morning.

After he leaves the room, fired up about his new task, the following happens:

Harumi: But. Keiji-san, is such a nice person.
Harumi: For Mayoi-sama’s sake, pushing himself that hard…
???: …though the way he’s going about it is completely reckless.
Naruhodou: (…that voice…!)
Mitsurugi: Excuse me. …I overheard you talking.
Naruhodou: …Mi-Mitsurugi…!

Mitsurugi appears, cutting in at just the right time to comment on Itonokogiri’s behavior, with a smile on his face.

After he informs Naruhodou that a taskforce has been assemble to find Mayoi, Mitsurugi then goes to check on the bear, commenting that it’s a rare, high-class brand that only a few gets imported to Japan. He checks the time, commenting that it’s not too late. He then takes the bear from Naruhodou and leaves.

This is a super interesting analysis from OP! I really appreciate the level of effort put in here, and the translation work.

I’ll admit I’m not generally a GumWorth girlie but this timeline fits with my latest fic so well that I couldn’t not mention it.

In my fic, gay marriage is legalized in Japanifornia, but Phoenix and Miles need to deal with three previous marriages apiece that took place in other states and countries, which have suddenly become valid and need to be cleared away if they want to marry each other.

The most detailed marriage of all six is that of Miles and Gumshoe, which happens when Gumshoe tries to help Miles through his mental health crisis during the year he chose death. He proposes during a pretty romantic getaway at his parents’ summer home under the guise of getting Miles health insurance while Miles doesn’t have a job.

I did not have all of this context from the Japanese version when I wrote it, but I did know that it’s clear Miles only trusts and speaks to Gumshoe during this period of time and they’re far more close than Phoenix and Miles are, considering Phoenix is left to think Miles is dead far longer than Gumshoe does (if Gumshoe ever did in the first place). The closeness between them is undeniable.

Here’s the fic I’m referencing just as an FYI in case you want to read it. It’s got both silly and sad parts to it, because divorce, but something that’s sweet is that Gumshoe and Miles continue to be close even after their breakup.
