tidings of comfort and joy by FrozenNightmare – Doctor Who, Clara & Ensemble, rated G. Summary:

Clara is plotting.
Not the evil-pranky-Christmas kind of plotting (although she did consider it and kind of loved the idea), the kind that comes from seeing the owner of a pair of big sad eyes mope around the TARDIS for sixteen hours straight. He doesn’t say anything, but she suspects it’s due to the lack of certain companions traveling with his older selves and his prophetic supposed death on Christmas Day (according to an alien on Androzani, although she’s not sure how much she believes it.)
She’s got Kate Stewart on speed-dial and a time machine wrapped around her finger. She is a god.

After being shot and taken into custody, the “phantom” lays in a guarded hospital bed, and Bobby Fulbright lays there with him, staring out through the same eyes as the two of them try to understand who they are, and what the road ahead looks like. Maybe the phantom doesn’t know what regret feels like, but Bobby Fulbright does.
Later, Miles Edgeworth brings a secretive request to Phoenix Wright regarding a political matter– an attempt to make a deal with the Phantom and use his information to find out who was really pulling the strings and bring them to justice.
With Simon Blackquill and Athena Cykes assigned as their psychologists, the Phantom and Fulbright must grapple with their identity, their deeds, their future, and their love for the twisted samurai whom they betrayed.
All the while, Edgeworth and Wright find their relationship tested as they walk the narrow path between pursuing real justice, and the dark age of the law.

Age gaps in a romance between characters who initially knew one another when the younger character was fairly young are really fascinating to work through from a character study point of view.

  • When did they know? If the young party knew first, did the older one have to rebuff them?
  • if they had to rebuff them, how did they feel about it at the time? Did they even have feelings for the younger party yet? or was it something that came afterwards?
  • When did the way they saw the younger party change? Was it a major incident all at once, or something gradual?
  • Does the older party feel guilt or shame for their feelings toward the younger party changing as they aged? Is there a feeling of confusion?
  • If the older party actually did have feelings when the younger one was too young, how do they deal with those feelings? how do they feel about themselves for having them?
  • If the younger party was initially rebuffed, how do they feel about being told to wait?
  • Does the younger party have to fight to be seen as a viable romantic target at all?
  • “I could never see them like that!”
  • “How can I get them to see me like I want to be seen?”

It just adds so many interesting psychological dynamics and so much push and pull and tension and confusion. Very compelling and fascinating to think about.

something abt how phoenix is the narrative foil to godot, maya becoming the leader of the fey clan (how mia was supposed to), and edgeworth fulfilling lana skye’s pursuit of truth as a prosecutor and how that all felt so finished by the end of trials and tribulations and then having it ripped away by aj:aa and just being left with a distant feeling towards the characters. trucy has her tricks and games but, try as she might, she doesn’t bear responsibility like maya, and kristoph never changes like edgeworth does and you dont know how phoenix is really feeling during all of the games events. because you are alienated from them as apollo, just a 3rd person perspective into their lives.

(also gumshoe being w the player through the pw trilogy and investigations and constantly providing us w evidence and information) and then we see ema skye again, one really connected to us during maya’s absence, and we hope she regards us as a familiar face, all to be reminded that we arent phoenix anymore—were apollo, some new lawyer yet to have any significance, not even connected to the name wright yet, and any familiarity we expect with ema isnt there. even after we confirm were with phoenix, shes still a lot colder than her younger self in rfta or investigations—and were slapped again w the reality that something is very very wrong)

AA:AJ shatters the original trilogy to pieces, and it’s an awful feeling and there’s lots of problems with the second trilogy, but there’s something weirdly compelling about it.

The second trilogy almost feels like a branch universe off a bad ending.

Like in the “mainline” universe, Edgeworth should have been there that day in court to prosecute Gramarye.

But he wasn’t.

And everything went to hell.

Klavier grinned that showstopping, stage-light grin of his and pulled his sunglasses down over his nose from where they’d been perched in his hair.

“Who’s to say it isn’t? They say the devil is in the details, and the devil’s advocate was a defense attorney, ja? Law is a tool of justice, fraulein. Much like a knife is a tool for whatever you cut. Nahyuta and I are handing you a knife, and asking you to make a pledge.”

Nahyuta raised his eyebrow, and his smile turned a touch amused as he turned to offer the page.

“A knife and a pledge. My fellow prosecutor speaks true…the knife of justice calls to those who yearn to wield it, just as Lady Kee’ra once learned when she took up the dagger in the Holy Mother’s name.”
